CELEBRATION OF LEARNING - Kinder Arrell

"No Way Yirrikipayi"
In Kinder Arrell we have been learning all about words that rhyme and developing our sense of connectedness to First Nations people. No Way Yirrikipayi is a fun, rhyming story that shares Tiwi names for animals and was written and illustrated by children at the Milikapiti school.
We were inspired by the illustrations and drew our favourite animal from the story, then we used dye to colour the pictures and painted a background for the animals.
Can you spot the snake, turtle or wallaby?

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
North West Schools Futsal Tournament
On Friday 9th May, 30 students participated in the Primary School Futsal tournament, that was held at the Devonport Recreation Centre. Futsal is inside soccer with only a few varied rules and it is a fast paced and highly skilful game. Our teams played 4 games throughout the day, several times playing 2 games back-to-back. I would like to thank Mr Taylor and Mrs Stillman for their assistance during the day. At times there were 3 teams playing at the same time, so their coaching skills were required to make substitutions and encouragement from the sidelines.
One of our teams played in a semi-final at the end of the tournament and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the grand final match, well done 5/6 Boys Gold team. On another fantastic note, 3 of our students were invited to join the State Futsal team that will play in Queensland later this year. Congratulations to Harry J, Preston S and Lucas F.
School Cross Country
This year the School Cross Country Carnival was run on a Monday with the weather being favourable for long distance running. Students completed the course that was run entirely on the school oval. To make the event a little more fun, all grades navigated their way over, under and through several obstacles.
Again, it is wonderful to see so many students embracing the challenge, that for many is quite difficult. We had numerous students encouraging each other, congratulating all finishers, not just the winners. We even had students that had finished, go back out onto the course to support other students that were still making their way around.
A big thank you must go out to all staff for their support in helping make the day run so smoothly. The sport leaders/house captains for their help in setting-up/packing-up and being marshals out on the course, and to the many family members that came along to watch the great day of running.
Soccer in Schools
Each year Devonport Junior Soccer offer a program to introduce students to the sport of soccer. This year we had 3 days of “Soccer in Schools”. The Devonport Strikers players that delivered the program had a series of skills and fun games for the students to participate in. It is hoped that this is a catalyst for students to try soccer as a sport one day.
As an added incentive the DJSI left 10 soccer balls for the school to use. These will be made available to students at recess/lunch time to use on the school oval.
Walk Safely to School Day
Every year students, parents and staff walk to school from the Big Apple. This is a great way to start the day and an opportunity to reinforce some road safety messages. A big thanks to all the parents/grandparents and carers that braved the cool morning and walked to school with their child/children. Thanks to staff that met the group at the start of the walk to share in the day and remember children under the age of 10 should always hold an adult's hand when crossing the road or use a designated crossing with a crossing guard.
NWPSSA Cross Country Carnival
Each year Spreyton Primary participates in the Inter-Primary Cross Country. This event is held at the Ulverstone Football Ground/Fairway Park. Our top 5 runners in Grades 3 - 6 from our school carnival are selected into this team to compete against 37 other primary schools. Spreyton participated in the Division B group against Boat Harbour, Devonport Christian School, Latrobe, Montello, Table Cape, Somerset and Port Sorell. (this is based on how many students attend each school)
Grade 3 students run 1.4km, Grade 4’s run 1.8km, Grade 5’s run 2.2km’s and the Grade 6’s 2.5km’s. At the end of the day points are tallied to work out the divisional winners, with the lowest score the winner. This year Spreyton Primary came 2nd in our division, which is a fantastic result. Well done to all the runners, a great reward for their training leading up to the day.
A very big thank you to Mr Taylor, Miss French, Mr Hudson and Mrs Borlini for being a part of the team and helping out on the day.

HeartKids Day - Friday June 20

Dear Spreyton Primary School Community,
On Friday, 20th June, our school will be joining in Hero for HeartKids Day!
What is HeartKids Day?
HeartKids Day helps raise money and awareness for children with Childhood-onset Heart Disease (CoHD). CoHD means a child is born with, or develops, a heart condition when they are young. These conditions can make life challenging for families, and some children need to visit the hospital often or have special surgeries. We have a number of students at Spreyton who live with these conditions, so this cause is very close to our hearts.
What is “Hero for HeartKids”?
Hero for HeartKids is a special day where people dress up as superheroes to show support for all the brave children with heart conditions. It helps raise money so HeartKids can support families with things like hospital visits, information, and counselling. Every dollar helps make life a bit easier for kids and their families.
How can you help?
On the day, we are inviting everyone to dress up as their favourite superhero! You could be Superman, Wonder Woman, a nurse, or even your own made-up hero. Please bring a gold coin donation to help HeartKids keep supporting families.
Let’s come together, have some fun, and be heroes for all the kids in our community living with heart disease!
Thank you for your support.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

Classes at Spreyton Primary once again participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime. Each year schools share a book chosen by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). The event aims to promote the value of reading and literacy for young children and encourages them to develop a love of reading. It was held on the 21st of May at 12.00 noon
In the past books have been read from space and the Taronga Zoo. Each year, almost 2 million students participate in the event across Australia and New Zealand. This year the book The Truck Cat was read by the author, Deborah Frenkel. At Spreyton classes joined together to listen to the story on-line at 12.00 noon. This link will take you to one of the readings. The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel | National Simultaneous Storytime 2025 | Bedtime Stories
"The Truck Cat" tells the story of Yacoub, a truck driver, and Tinka, his cat companion, who travel together across Australia. They are inseparable, finding comfort and companionship in each other while navigating unfamiliar landscapes. The story explores themes of immigration, identity, and the search for home, as Yacoub reflects on his past while Tinka enjoys the journey. When Yacoub and Tinka are separated, they are determined to find each other, highlighting the importance of friendship and belonging. (Good Reads 2025).
