Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
At Spreyton Primary, the wellbeing of our students is a top priority. We want to hear directly from our students about how they’re feeling and what’s happening in their lives.
Students in grades 4-6 will soon be participating in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. This important survey helps us build a clear picture of our students’ current wellbeing and identify ways we can better support them to thrive and engage in learning. The more students who take part, the more meaningful the insights will be.
This survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
Survey Details:
When: 25-8-25 until 19-9-25
Who: Grades 4 - 6
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
An email with more information has been sent home to all grade 4-6 families. This includes a link to Frequently Asked Questions and instructions for families who prefer their child doesn’t participate.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact the school office.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Uniform
Thank you to families for continuing to support our uniform policy. Please reach out if you are having trouble with school jumpers for winter. There are second hand options available at the school.

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING - 5/6 Butler

In Science, Grade 5/6 Butler have been exploring how and why metals rust. We learned that rusting is a chemical reaction between iron, oxygen, and water – and that some substances can make this process happen faster or slower.
To test this, we set up an experiment using iron nails (sanded to remove their protective coating) and placed them in different liquids: tap water, salt water, cooking oil, lemon juice, vinegar, and petroleum jelly. We also had a control nail in air. Over the next two weeks, we observed the nails closely to see which ones rusted fastest and which stayed in good condition.
Most experiments predict salt water will cause the most rust, sometimes plain tap water wins, and there are a few possible reasons:
- Salt levels – If the salt water wasn’t salty enough, it might not have sped up the rusting as much as expected.
- Oxygen levels – Rust needs oxygen as well as water. Tap water may have had more dissolved oxygen than your salt water, which can speed up rusting.
- Contamination or handling – If the tap water cup got more air exposure or was stirred/moved more, it could have given the rusting process a boost.
It’s been exciting to watch real science in action and to see our predictions tested.

FOYER DISPLAY - KINDER ARRELL AND KINDER FRANKS
This term, Kinder Arrell and Kinder Franks had a teddy bear picnic. Children brought their favourite bear or toy to school for the day and enjoyed a number of bear related activities. The children were enthusiastic participants in all craft activities but the overwhelming favourite was decorating and eating bear shaped biscuits.

SCIENCE WEEK
Over the last fortnight we have had two incursions; Forestry Tasmania Education and Hydro Tasmania. The Prep/1 & 1/2 classes had the opportunity to work with Emma from Forestry Tasmania. She brought along a collection of hands-on materials and activities centring on life and living in forests. The children shared their own experiences when in the bush. In small teams the children had the challenge of building their own trees considering how it will be used by creatures in the forest.
The Grade 2/3/4 classes had the opportunity to work with Sue from Hydro Tasmania. They explored magnetism and forces. As young scientists they worked around different stations exploring these to ideas. There was a lot of discussion by children about how magnetism works, the forces involved and how it is used in everyday life.
Next week 5/6 classes will have a visit from students completing Science degrees at the Tasmania of University. The students will be sharing their experiences and examples of the type of studies they are doing as part of their course. In the past we have had students doing marine-biology, astrophysics and botany.

NATIONAL WEEK BULLYING NO WAY

The theme for 2025 is 'Be bold. Be kind. Speak up.'
It takes courage to spark change.
Bullying is everyone's responsibility. It takes a community to be brave and address bullying behaviours, within and beyond the school gate.
Students can be bold, kind and take a stand to support others being bullied. While parents and teachers are there to support children and young people learn how to behave in a positive way.
In our community and in our school, we want a place where everyone can belong, a place that celebrates everyone, and where bullying is never accepted.
This Bullying No Way Week, we're asking students, schools, families and communities to be bold and say something, be kind and support someone, and be proud to take a stand against bullying.

SAVE THE DATE - SEEN
Could you do with some no-nonsense and practical parenting advice? How about strategies to care for yourself so you can fully show up for your kids? Join us for a night at Reading Cinemas on August 19th at 7.00pm for a screening of the parenting documentary called Seen, with free pre-screening supper provided from 6.00pm. This has been organised by the School Association Committee as a way to bring our community together with the hope of enhancing the well-being of our families. The film features actual parents that everyone can relate to, including Joe Williams, a former Australian rugby player and professional boxer, openly sharing stories of how they’ve turned their families' lives around. Paired with a whole team of parenting experts, including Maggie Dent and Dr Billy Garvey, this makes for a night not to be missed.
We’re also super excited to announce that Allison Davies will be a special guest on the night to speak before the film, followed by a short Q&A at the conclusion. Allison has worked with Maggie Dent and other professionals featured in the film. She is a professional in her own right, touring nationally and internationally, conducting workshops and sharing her knowledge of understanding neurodivergence and trauma-informed approaches. We are really lucky to have her join us.
Tickets for this event are offered for free to the Spreyton community only. This week, they will be promoted to the wider community for a fee of $10 + BF. This is your chance to secure your free ticket.
So come and join us, grab a beer, wine or coffee from the kiosk and let’s enjoy a night of connection and insight together.
Please note this is an adult-only event.
