Open Classrooms Afternoon
A big thank you to all the families who came along to make this a great Spreyton Primary event. I was busy at the BBQ; however, I saw the photos, and it looked like everyone had a great time. 184 of our 303 students had a family member attend our Open Classroom afternoon.
Thanks to all the families who dropped in to say hello at the BBQ. A big thanks to our EFA Staff/cleaners who helped with cooking duties and then cleaned the rooms after 5:00 p.m. Thanks to Mrs Wicks for organising all the ingredients for our BBQ. The team in the Wellbeing Room served up 364 sausages. Mr Gratton will be sending out a quick 3-question survey. Any feedback we receive will help guide future improvements.
SunSmart
We recently renewed our SunSmart Policy Accreditation. Thank you to Jemima Hamer, who assisted us with this process. One change to our SunSmart Policy is the extension of the duration for wearing school hats. Students will now wear their school hats until the end of April and will begin wearing them again from 1st September each year. These are the times when the UV is at level 3 or higher.
School Photos
Just a reminder that these are on Monday, 31st March (Kinder Franks at a later date). If something happens and you require a spare school shirt on the day, let our administration team know. We want everyone to look their best and we are here to help.

OPEN CLASSROOMS AFTERNOON - Thank you for Joining Us!
Last Thursday, we opened our classrooms to families—and what a fantastic afternoon it was! Students loved showing their learning classrooms and favourite activities, and it was wonderful to see so many families engaging with their children’s school life.
The BBQ was a hit, too, with Mr Hudson cooking up a storm on the tongs! It was a great way to come together, chat, and enjoy a relaxed afternoon around the school.
Thank you for making the time to come along. We’d love to hear your thoughts. Please take a moment to complete our short Feedback Survey for Families using the survey link or scan the QR Code below so we can keep improving events like this.

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING - 1/2 Charleston
In the past couple of weeks, 1/2 Charleston has been working on creating better sentences through word choice when describing characters in our writing. We have been talking about adjectives and how they add more interest to our characters.
This week we read the book Mo Poke and considered different ways we could describe the Southern Boo Book Owl, commonly called a Mo Poke. Here are some of the children’s work samples.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING

WHAT ARE WELLBEING LESSONS? WHY ARE THEY BEING TAUGHT TO YOUR CHILDREN?
Supporting Our Student’s Wellbeing
Dear Families,
We are excited to share our ongoing commitment to the holistic well-being of our children and students. Our approach encompasses several key domains: emotional well-being, social well-being, connection, and belonging.
Emotional Wellbeing: We strive to ensure that every child feels valued, loved, and safe. By creating a supportive environment, we help children develop resilience and emotional intelligence.
Social Wellbeing: Building strong, positive relationships is crucial. We encourage social interactions that foster a sense of community and mutual respect among students.
Connection and Belonging: It's important that all children feel a sense of belonging. We work to ensure they have access to the material basics and that their physical, mental, and emotional needs are met. This includes promoting a positive sense of culture and identity.
Our holistic approach acknowledges the many factors that contribute to the well-being of children and young people. By addressing these areas, we aim to create a nurturing environment where every child can thrive, learn, and participate fully.
Thank you for your continued support in making our community a place where children can flourish.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Karen Allen
Emotions are natural, and displaying them in a healthy way is important.

STAYING SAFE ONLINE
During Digital Technology lessons, students have been learning how to stay safe online, deal with cyberbullying, and avoid scams. Online safety is a shared responsibility between the community, parents, schools, and students. The information below is about keeping your children safe when they are online at home. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Families with Children 5 – 12 years old
• Keep the computer or device in a supervised area of your home. Check-in regularly with your child to see what they are viewing.
• Explore the online world with them. Play games with them. Do a creative project together.
• Think about social media readiness. Most social media sites require users to be at least 13 years of age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13.
• Encourage respect and empathy. Teach them to avoid sharing or posting things that may upset others.
• Encourage them to learn about online safety by exploring the e-Safety Commissioner Kids website: Kids – eSafety Commissioner
• Be clear about how much time they can spend online, the apps they can use, the websites they can visit and what they can share or post online.
• Ensure your own devices are protected by a password or pin, so your child cannot accidentally come across inappropriate content.
• Use parental control tools appropriate for the age and experience of your child. Be upfront and get your child on board. Let them know that these can be reviewed and changed as they get older and they continue to demonstrate responsible behaviour. Consider installing a ‘child-friendly’ search engine that will allow them to explore a limited number of sites.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Spreyton Primary Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday, March 11th, Prep - Grade 6 students participated in the school athletics carnival. Activities included running races, sack races, egg and spoon races, a three-legged race, discus, shot put, javelin, vortex throw, long jump, bean bag races, and foxtail throwing.
Students participated for points in all the novelty and field events and completed running races in their grade groups.
Thank you to all staff for their work to make the day a great success and enjoyable for all students who participated. It was also fantastic seeing so many parents and family members along to watch or help out.
The following day the Kinders were scheduled to complete their carnival, however, the weather did not cooperate. The event was moved inside and was a great success.
Again the support from parents and family members was enormous, and it was exciting watching these students participate in their first school based event. We also had the help of our House Captains and Grade 5/6 school leaders. They were our judges and had the very important role of handing out finishing ribbons.
At the end of all the competitions, the final house points were as follows:
Kelcey - 2074 points
Maidstone - 2093 points
Torquay - 2171 points
The Torquay leaders will present the athletics shield to Mr Hudson at the next school sharing assembly.
Spreyton Primary Athletics Carnival

North-West Representatives Athletics
Each year, Spreyton has the opportunity to participate in a representative athletics carnival. This is held at the Penguin Athletics track and is run over two days. The selected 3/4s participated on Wednesday, March 5th, and the 5/6s on Thursday, March 6th.
A very big thank you to Mrs Klineberg, Miss Cock, Miss French, Mrs De Graaf, Mrs Smith and Miss Stokes for supervising and managing the 3/4 team, and Mrs Stocks, Mr Taylor, Mrs Lowry, Mr Ritson and Mrs Grey for supporting the 5/6 team.
Students raced in 75 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, shot put, long jump and relays.
All students participated in heats. If successful, they then went on to race in a semi-final. And if they finished in the first two positions of a semi-final, they were named to compete in a final the following week. Staff and parents were pleased with the behaviour of students at the event and commented on their willingness to put forth their best efforts. A great example of this was two Grade 5 boys stepping into a Grade 6 relay team. Due to illness the Grade 6 boys team was left quite short, without a second thought Tander K and Lucas F took on the challenge. Demonstrating great Courage and Connection.
3/4D - Harrison B, Caleb M
3/4K - Nate B, Angus S, Jake W, Laila D, Taya N, Haylee W, Willow H, Ellis R, Nixon E, Harvey R, Grace O
3/4P - Jett H, Zeke B, Emily B, Sayler S, Marli H
5/6S - Seth M, Lucas F, Ivy M, Ella R, Lilly M, Indy H, Hudson C
5/6RB - Sierra W, Zaharakis B, Levi U, Connor O, Sienna R, Sasha A, Jack O
5/6CB - Armani W, Jazzmyn P, Charlie K, Mia C, Tander K
After the 2 days of competition, Spreyton finished in 3rd position, just behind Port Sorell and Somerset Primary Schools, in Division B. Well Done to all runners.
Some individuals had some personal success, qualifying for the Twilight finals. This gained them entry into the coastal finals on Thursday, the 13th. From this event, a North West team was selected to compete in Launceston against athletes from all over Tasmania.
Below are these students and the events they are competing in.
Grade 3 - Zeke B - 400 metres; Jake W - 75 metres; Jett H - 200 metres / 100 metres
Grade 4 - Sayler S - 75 metres; Caleb M - 200 metres
Grade 5 - Jack O - 75 metres; Indy H - 200 metres / 100 metres; Lucas F - 1500 metres.
Grade 6 - Zaharakis B - 1500 metres
Plus, a special mention to Indy H, who claimed the title of the best Grade 5 boy in the long jump, winning this event at the carnival. He was presented with a coastal champion ribbon at the Twilight finals.

JUNIOR LANDCARE
We have now completed a full rotation of our Landcare teams, and all seems to be going fine. Two garden beds are almost ready for replanting after a lot of weeding. Our next task will be investigating what winter crops to plant.
We have been continuing to eat strawberries and taking tomatoes home. Our radish seeds have gone off and will need to be planted soon. The roses near the outside stage were pruned last week. A very thorny job.
The sunflowers are starting to show signs of aging, and we’ll be collecting the heads for seeds soon. We did have one mystery involving the sunflowers, with one developing a face, but the villain was discovered recently (see photos).

ROAD CROSSING SAFETY

We had the school’s Crossing Guard let us know that some children using the crossing are forgetting to wait until the Crossing Guard has indicated to the students that they can cross. Not all children do as they are asked, even after a reminder. To assist us in ensuring that your child gets to school and home safely, could you please remind your child that to follow the Guard's instructions at all times when crossing the road? This includes not following the Guard out onto the road, waiting on the side of the road until the Guard is in the middle and walking across when asked to. Thank you.

Please contact the school office if you have any problems with this.

STUDENT SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL - Keeping Kids Safe

Before school, classroom doors open at 8:30 a.m. This is also when supervision starts in the playground. Students who arrive before this time are to wait quietly outside their classroom.
Younger students may need to wait with their older siblings. Before school care is also available for those families with work commitments who need to drop off early. Children should not use equipment until supervision begins at 8:30 a.m. This is a duty of care necessity.
After school, if families choose to remain after 2:45 p.m., they are expected to monitor their children in the playground. Children should continue to follow the playground expectations after school, staying out of garden beds, playing with peers safely, and using equipment sensibly.
If family members are running late for pick-up, please contact the office. Children will be supervised at the office.
